Last Swim Meet for 2007

1650 Meet- Fairland Aquatic Center

Results:
Julie- 20:29.63
Jeff- 18:30.19

I swam a smart race, took it out very easy then picked it up around the 850. I never take distance events out easy so decided that since I knew I'd be nowhere near my 19:22 PR that I would just experiment with this swim. I definitely felt exhausted at the end, but happy that I swam a smart race. Jeff was two lanes over from me and lapped me THREE times. Good thing I didn't make any bets with him over this race!

Friday, December 7th (my birthday!!!)
1500 meter freestyle-
(BEFORE MEET): I have never swum this event before so this will be a learning experience. I think mentally it will be better than the 1650 because I always think that the last 150 really is annoying even though both distances are a mile. I plan to take it out slow for the first 500, then pick it up and cruise until the 1200 then use up what's left.

(AFTER MEET): 20:11.48- Ok, so it wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be, but the race wasn't bad. I didn't feel that great in the water and didn't feel like I was moving through the water efficiently. I tried my best, but just fell off the pace I wanted to maintain around 850 meters. I am happy with this swim, but 1500 meters is a LONG race!

Saturday, December 8th
50 meter back-
(BEFORE MEET): I have only swum this once in masters and went 35.22. I think I can go faster.

(AFTER MEET): 33.62- This race was incredible. I had a great start, went slightly deep, but my dolphin kicks were strong. I had a good turn and really moved through the second 25 and felt like I was sprinting and actually grabbing the water on my pull, something I rarely feel when I try to sprint. It was a great race!

200 meter free-
(BEFORE MEET): I haven't swum this event and my freestyle hasn't been that great in meets this year. Recently my freestyle has felt really good in practice so I am confident that I can go faster than my 2:29 seed time. That was the first 200 of my 400 free at Albatross in 2006. How much faster? I have no idea. I'm not making any predictions!

(AFTER MEET): 2:21.42- This race surprised me, A LOT! I started off just cruising and got a lead on my heat. I continued to pick up my pace throughout the swim and then just used up everything I had left on the last 50. I had solid turns and felt great in the water, like I was just gliding through it! After this race, I knew I was "ON" and ready for Sunday!

Sunday, December 9th
400 meter free-
(BEFORE MEET): This one should be fun! Jeff and I have been talking trash about who's 400 time will be faster. Of course he's talking about his 400 IM vs. my 400 free! The one other time I swam this event was at Albatross in 2006 and I went 5:07.70. I will be completely happy if I swim a smart race, and breaking 5 minutes would be wonderful!

(AFTER MEET): 4:56.12- Jeff really set the bar for the bet we had going by swimming a 4:56.70 in his 400 IM. I was so happy for him for having a great race, but quickly did the math to figure that I would have to average 1:14s in my 400 free to beat him. Last weekend after we did a set of 5 x 100 free on lots of rest I KNEW I could pull off a 4:56, but everything would have to be perfect! I asked him after his 400 IM how he felt about the bet and he said "pretty good." I took that as a challenge! I had a great start, not that it matters too much in a 400 free, but I knew I'd need everything in this race. Jeff was counting for me at the other end of the pool. I started off swimming with the girl in the lane next to me. I realized that I was out fast so I slowed down slightly headed into the third turn. I picked up the pace after the 200, then just swam strong after the 300 and just sprinted the last 50. I wasn't going to have the best 400 free of my life and then loose by a few tenths. I saw my time...4:56.12 on the board and couldn't remember what Jeff's time was. Before I got too excited, I jumped out of the pool and ran over to where the results were posted. I saw his time and then knew for sure that I had won the bet! He was already over to my end of the pool with a huge hug for me! It was incredible. I took over 11 seconds off my previous best time. I think I will remember this race for a long time!

200 meter back-
(BEFORE MEET): I love this event. It was my event in college and has continued to be one of my favorites in masters. I have swum it a few times in SCM meets and am always around 2:41-2:45. I would LOVE to see something in the 2:30s! Even if it is 2:39! I went 2:45 at Albatross this year and 2:41 last year. I need to keep my head on straight and focus on pacing and good turns.

(AFTER MEET): 2:38.90- This was definitely the low point in my meet....and I had a 3 second PR! I just felt so tired in the water. I stayed as strong as I could and just sucked it up and let it hurt! I was thrilled with my time, but not so happy that I just had nothing left in my legs and couldn't even kick off some of my walls. Swimming a 2:38 and feeling that tired is a sign of good things in the future! As I sat on the deck after the event with Mollie and Jeff, my legs were shaking and I just didn't want to have to stand up. I knew I had a great swim and that I had pushed myself through some pretty bad hurt! Secretly, I was a little worried about the 100 back!

100 meter back-
(BEFORE MEET): I am beginning to love this event. I have had some really great 100s in practice over the last few months. I went a 1:06.95 at the sprint meet (SCY) which converts to roughly a high 1:14 in SCM. At Albatross in March I was surprised by a 1:13.14 (SCM) and would love to go faster than that! When I was 18, I went my fastest 100 back in summer league which was 1:11.53. Going faster than that would be a pleasant surprise, but I will be happy with a solid race and good turns and dolphin kicks off the walls.

(AFTER MEET): 1:11.59- WOW! This was a GOOD race! I just decided that I wasn't sure how much I had left in me, but that I was going to use it all up! It was my last race of the weekend and I desperately wanted to go faster than the 1:13.14 from Albatross. I had a great start, good kicks and my arms felt fine. I kicked as hard as I could. After the first 50, I'm sure Jeff was thinking that I was never going to pull off a 1:11! I was so close to the girl next to me and just asked myself "Who wants it more?" I pulled and kicked as hard as I could for the last 50. Unfortunately I got excited and flipped too soon on my third turn and ended up with a little glide into the wall. Crap! I thought it was over for me! I just told myself to go HARD, and that it was almost over. I hit the wall and saw 1:11. Then I turned to the other end of the pool and saw Jeff. I felt so great and for the first time during the meet I raised both arms into the air and screamed! I was so close to where I was when I was 18. It felt so great to be within a tenth of my best ever 100 back.

Other exciting races included the Terrapin Masters setting a new NATIONAL RECORD in the 800 free relay. I'll never forget the excitement, watching them get more and more excited as the race went on, watching Mollie do the wiggle-cheer from the side of the pool for her Jeff. My Jeff swam incredible with THREE lifetime bests in 400 IM, 100 back and 100 IM, as well as solid races in his other events. Mollie's Jeff set a lifetime best in 100 back also and it was fun to see his excitement at the end of the long weekend of swimming! Mollie ROCKED the 100 and 200 back and may have had a lifetime best in the 100 back. It was a fun weekend, lots of socializing in the warm up and warm down pool as usual and fast swimming from everyone.

Winter has arrived!

Tucker LOVES the snow! We went to the tennis court last night for about an hour and since I didn't have a tennis ball with me I threw snowballs to him. He thought it was so much fun and tried to eat all of the snowballs after he figured out that he wouldn't be able to bring them back to me to throw again.
